Congratulations to our last essay contest winner, James Asbury III!!! Here is his winning entry:
The Book I’m Most Thankful For
The book that I am most thankful for is Showdown by Ted Dekker. It was published in 2006 and is the first in the Paradise series. It is also one of the books in the Books of History Chronicles. I first read it several years ago at someone’s suggestion and loved it.
At the time it was suggested to me, I had read all the books written by my favorite authors and was looking for a new favorite author. After hearing Dekker was a Christian author, I was skeptical at first–after all, how exciting could a “religious thriller” be?
I was very pleased to discover just how exciting the book was. After starting it, I did not stop until I finished the entire thing in one sitting. It was the most exhiliarating book ever, but it wasn’t just non-stop action. Showdown, along with most of Dekker’s other novels, has a deeper message. Showdown is a powerful parable pitting forces of good against forces of evil, with many obstacles in between. Although this has been done before, Dekker makes it apparent that winning isn’t easy or automatic–just like the struggle for souls in the world.
The reason I am so thankful for this particular book is because it was the first Ted Dekker book that I ever read. Because I enjoyed this book so much, I subsequently set out and read every other book he wrote. I now own all of his current books and the two movies that were based on his books. I am always watching for new books, and I always buy them the day they are released. Ted Dekker is now my favorite author, and I am very thankful that I read Showdown, because it not only gave me a new favorite author, but it showed me that religious books don’t have to be boring or old-fashioned. Because of Dekker, my favorite genre is now Christian Fiction, especially supernatural thrillers, such as his Books of History Chronicles. I highly recommend any of his books to those who love mysteries, thrillers, or just a good book.
